The first chief warden for
the Wis. Conservation Dept., MacKenzie is
remembered for professionalizing the warden
force, including setting qualifications,
writing the first warden's manual and securing
official uniforms.
After serving as a field
warden in northern Wis. (1917-25) and
chief warden (1925-34), he became the department's
director.
He was instrumental in establishing
the state game farm and conservation
center at Poynette (1934), founding the
Wisconsin Conservation Congress (1934),
hiring the first wildlife research biologists,
developing fish hatcheries, promoting
such key acquisitions as Northern Kettle
Moraine Forest and Horicon Marsh, and creating
an efficient state fire control system.
